Managing Through The Pandemic

How could we have imagined such uncertain, uncomfortable and worrying times? 

The Covid-19 pandemic caused many challenges in our lives and affected our physical and mental well being. These affects can be varied and may include disruption and confusion causing chaos to our lives, we may have feelings of fear and panic, anxiety and worry possibly causing withdrawal, self-isolation, anger issues or even conflict. 

How can we look after our mental well being in a crisis? 

  • Self-care is key we cannot support others if we are not looking after ourselves
  • Take each day at a time
  • Adhere to hygiene and social distancing government standards 
  • Stay connected with others – whether that be the people you live with or those further afield on the phone or video call
  • Take time out- distract yourself with stimulating and positive things you enjoy
  • Reach out to others about your worries and if you can, be a listening ear if they have worries too- if it concerns you, it is never too small to talk about
  • It often gives us a sense of achievement and positivity when we’ve been able to help and support others so if you can, do it
  • Try to note and be grateful for what and who you have when times feel particularly difficult
  • It might be helpful to keep well informed on the unfolding news but know your limits and try not to overload yourself with information, as this can exacerbate fear and worry
  • Remember that these are uncertain times that may continue to change and the unknown still lies ahead which can seem difficult to manage
  • Keep a routine- structure can help us feel grounded and in control where we can
  • Try to keep up with a good balance of healthy habits
  • Rest and relaxation 
  • Consider your environment, whether self-isolating or living in a busy household- a balance of ‘you’ time and time with others is important 
  • Acknowledge emotions may become heightened- anxiety, stress, isolation, claustrophobia- do your best to comfort yourself and keep things in perspective

  • Talk to a counsellor online
  • Phone a friend or family member 
  • Take a bubble bath 
  • Get creative- painting, drawing, crafts
  • Try something new or revisit past hobbies
  • Keep fit- walk, cycle, exercise 
  • Yoga or Pilates
  • Mindfulness
  • Singing 
  • Gardening 
  • Walk the dog
  • Decorating and DIY
  • Spend time with loved ones and pets 
  • Board games or online games with others 
  • Let your culture or religion support you 
  • Cooking and baking 
  • Organising 
  • Spring cleaning 
  • Keep a gratitude diary 
  • Online shopping 
  • Study
  • Learn a language 
  • Online dating 
  • Write poems or stories 
  • Catch up on box sets and movies 
  • Do a job for a neighbour
  • Apply for a key worker role 
  • Pamper yourself
  • Make post-Covid plans- holidays, concerts, parties, career aspirations
